I'm currently hating Ohio and it's horrible government. Thanks to their self-righteousness, I'm falling through the cracks of the healthcare insurance system.
See, the way this all is supposed to work is that if you make a small to moderate paycheck (me) you can get discounted health insurance, and if you have no income or a tiny income you can be on medicaid and essentially have insurance for free.
Ok, but here's the thing:
Ohio refused to get on board with the medicaid portion, so I've been unable to get insurance at all because I didn't make enough money to qualify for a discount.
What? Yes, you read that right. I was too poor to get a discount on health insurance. It's stupid.
It sucked, but whatever, I thought that part was over now because I have a job.
WRONG.
Now that I have a job, I do qualify for discounted healthcare. Yay!
But no. Because I can't get access to that healthcare. Because obtaining a job is not a qualifying life event. Losing one is, but not getting one.
Why? Because during the time when I was unemployed, I was supposed to be covered by medicaid and thus able to transition out when I got a job. But because Ohio decided to be moronic and hateful -- because they wanted to "fight Obama" with all the "good Republicans" (and hurt their citizens in the process) -- I was not on medicaid, so now I can not transition.
As frustrating as this is for me, I can not imagine how much worse this is for people less fortunate than me. I can not believe this is being supported by individuals who claim to care about people.
How on earth can you think you are better than anyone else, Ohio (and all the other states who did the same thing)? How can you possibly justify essentially making this recession harder? How is helpful to penalize people who are trying to gain employment?
*fist pump* 'merica!
Ugh.
