This month the theme for both Ipsy and Birchbox was summer. Shocking, right? One did immensely better than the other; can you guess who from the picture?
Ipsy
The bag is adorbs. I'm loving the summery colors. Sooooo much better than our stupid SCUBA bag last month.
But it's pretty much all downhill from here, my friends.
- Jersey Shore Sun Anti-aging lip conditioner in Vanilla Coconut Cream. My thoughts? It's chapstick. Plain and simple. Yeah, it's organic and that's cool but there's not even any SPF! How is that summery in the least? I was so unimpressed I didn't even break the label to sniff it. Re-gifting!
- Nicka K New York quad eyeshadow. This palette doesn't have a name but it's really pretty neutrals and the colors swatched pretty decent so I'll probably take this with me on trips since my other palettes are pretty big. Only complaint here is that wo of the colors are basically identical (oh and they're not very summery). Booo.
- Teez Read My Lips lipstick in Killing Me Softly. Love the packaging, minus the poor lineup of the super awesome skulls. I'd rather have one full skull than two half skulls sloppily slapped together. It's a pretty summer coral color in the tube that I bet I'd look great in but it smells SO MUCH I can't bring myself to try it. Why on earth would you make a perfume-y lipstick? Weird!!!! And I'm sure with a fragrance it's pretty drying, which my lips can not handle.
- Crown Brush tweezers. They're tweezers. The spoiler picture showed they would be pink so I was kind of excited about that but no, they're black. At least that makes them giftable to the fiancé since I'm in love with my Tweezerman set.
- Eva NYC Freshen Up dry shampoo. The one redeemable item in the bag. I love mini dry shampoos because my hair is pretty oily but also curly so I can't wash it too often. Dry shampoos are my saving grace and I like keeping them handy everywhere: my purse, my car, my fiancé's car, my locker at work....
Moving on to (spoiler) the winner here...
Birchbox
- Oribe beach wave and shine spray. Yes! A beachy summery hair product, alright Birchbox!
- Supergoop City Sunscreen face serum. 30SPF. Are you seeing this, Ipsy? This stuff saved me yesterday when I forgot I'd recently done a peel on my face and then spent like two hours at the pool. (I know, horrible timing on my part!)
- The Balm bronzer in Take a Dip. Ok, this is the tiniest bronzer ever. How on earth do I get my brush in there? This is good packaging for their eyeshadow singles (I like the magnetic closure) but bronzer? Come on. I guess you could use it to contour your nose but that's about it.
- Juara facial exfoliant. I've never heard of this brand but exfoliating is important in the summer to make sure your tan stays even.
- Stila liquid lipstick in Bella. I tried this and oh my god did I look terrible. It did pass the kiss test though: none came off on Jamie, despite being hella color! Super drying and super hard to get off, I'll be passing this along to a friend who isn't afraid of my germs.
Despite a ridiculously tiny bronzer and a ridiculously bright lipstick that simply wasn't for me, Birchbox blew Ipsy out of the watesr. The curation was spot-on for summer and most of the items were well know top-brands. Now, granted, I did choose the curated box this month from Birchbox, but at least they offer that option!
Speaking of which, Ipsy: you need to step up your game, girlfriend! This is the second month in a row you've had your butt handed to you!
